Relics – The tale of a Kraken

You need better mods, which has nothing to do with being a whale or F2P, but simply having favorable RNG while slicing.

Speed is still king in drevan mirror matches even when playing R1 vs R7.
Padme, gg (including suicide), jkr have well established hard counters.

Your arena shard isn't the toughest, you just have mediocre mods... Invest some time diligently slicing mods and hopefully in a few weeks your results will be different.

@vinitwins Spending lets you take more spins on the mod RNG wheel, which gets you more chances, which in theory will let you hit more favorable RNG, and therefore have better mods. (Choices, I know - which is the flip side of the argument - spenders don't have nearly as many to make).

Also, you have no idea how difficult the shard in question is. It might be hard, it might not be, who knows? You don't. If you have an account at the top of more than one shard, then you probably know this yourself. They vary widely.

I'm in one shard that has a player that left the game 67 days ago and is still at 33. Another who got purged in the great crystal scheme 269 days ago sitting at 225 (running a 301 speed JKR). In a different shard, I could drop past 225 running G13 R2,3,4 CLS or a 320 Speed G12 DR (before the Malak return). Shards differ. A lot.

I use DR, Thrawn, Badstilla, HK, GMY or Sion. My DR is 307 speed and my other SE toons are quite close. Thrawn, Sion and GMY are almost breaking the 300 mark. Nobody in the top 50 has 1 DR under 325. I broke into the top 100 before Malak and after Malak I dropped down into 100 to 150 range. Today I'm back at the beginning almost in the 200 range.

I'll reiterate that a FTP cannot take 1 on my server much less break the top 50. Whatever you may have smartly done wouldn't be enough. I don't care about what other shards have done or is doing I am merely saying that it is impossible for FTP to take 1 spot or even break the top 50.

My shard is ultra competitive and I wouldn't be surprised to see JKR and DRs as low as the 1000s. The top just don't run DR or GG nuke or GG sep or Padme exclusively because they have all of them G13 and now relics.

Besides no matter how smart you allocate res or whatever ftp magic you claim to use. The simple fact is to finish the relics for 1 toon is roughly $250.00+. These guys have done it for multiple toons.

The fact that DR is your fastest guy says you do not know what you are doing. With your comp it should be BSF and or potentially GMY (most off sets I have seen use KRU or Nil for their 5th never seen Sion).

The queen of the DR speed meta is Karen. My Karen is 306 (DR is higher) in my 10 month old shard. Until she got to 306 (#3 in shard) my R7 DR HK BSF could be beat by just about any team with faster mods (6 star zzMalak and R4 SiT are other two). Now I stay in Top 10. Its the Mods not the relics at least for DR mirrors. If your dead or feared your R7 doesnt matter....

No such f2p could possibly exist.

We have a dolphin (mostly relic spending really) in our young shard with 323 DR and 308 BSF. You dont have to spend boatloads to be competitive if u start the game with a plan. Also has 7 star zzDM 2nd go around (G13 and zz same day due to planning). Top 50 in Div 6 and very knowledgeable. Alot of this is focus which I wish I had more of.

Tho even being a whale you can still make bad decisions and mistakes in arena, gac,so others can beat you,but still.I just want to bring a different perspective here.

Spenders have always had an advantage to start, otherwise they wouldn't spend. Nothing new here

Do you work for CG, or just feel compelled to reply to everyone with snarky arguing?

Thank you! I am an extremely competitive person so f2p is not an option for me. I wouldn’t enjoy the game. It has nothing to do with entitlement. I only enjoy it if I can compete with the other top people. I would be miserable only being able to climb to 15th in arena instead of first. That’s just how games work for me. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being F2P or finding enjoyment from the game in other ways though if you can.

You do know that it is possible to compete in arena ftp. You likely already have your arena team at g13. At least I'd hope so if you spend as much as you say.

And relics up to level 4 or 5 is only a manner of farming the signal data. Only a few weeks of farming.

Add to that the fact that relics add no speed so if you have good mods, you can still win against r7 teams with just g13 or r3 teams.

You can also get creative on offense. Gmy with speed gets tenacity up on your team and lets you resist many of tge debuffs while you land yours. That can make up for a little gear.

And when the dust settles you can spend again if and when you feel it's value to you.

But spend $500 a month or quit are not the only options. There are plenty of ftp in the top of arena through skill. Saying you have to spend $500 a month to be competitive is just not true.

What a long dead arena shard? I assure you in mine FTP couldn't break the top 25 maybe even 50. I mean we have G13 DR and Malak, JKR and company, and GG nukem along with regular sep, Padme teams teams in 200s and up. I have spent a decent amount on SWGOH and I can barely break into the top 100 for a few seconds.

We already have level 7 GG relics, DR, Malak, Anakin and more. Plus the assorted 1 to 7 range toons. This is all in the top 200. It is not even possible for a FTP player to even break the top 50 in my shard.

Since a f2p can be one of those with that g13 Malak, or Padme, or GG team, the idea that they can’t possibly compete with those teams is silly.

Please. I've got, i don't know 30ish G12 and one G13. I looked at pushing him to R2 but i'd have to blow a lot on cantina to get all the pieces only available there. I don't really have the crystals to keeping forking out for those things a 16 per try to crank it up - especially with god knows what's need for R7. Meanwhile, in my shard at my ranks, i'm seeing teams with 3-4 R7's. That's a 0.0% chance of win. And my G13 isn't even on my arena team, and even if so, that R1 isn't going to do squat.

So, could i get Malak? eventually, sure. I just got DR. Happens when they do like 6 new legendaries in 6 months. Impossible to keep up if you're not buying your way there or hoarded for a year ahead of time. So, buy the time i can actually get there, they'll have their roster G13'd and R7'd, but i'll have my G13 Malak...maybe.

If you want to let people buy to win, fine. Take the rewards out of it. Let them buy their way into bragging rights, but don't let it impact everyone else. Or, as has been suggested in this thread, move them to their own servers. Don't do what they did before and spread them to less whale infested waters for them to dominate.

I'm ftp and have 6 g13. I have pushed 1 to relic 5 and 2 to relic 2. The others are relic 1.

Relic 1 requires no signal data and is a free be. Relic 2 requires 15 of one type so a day of free energy. I do 3 refreshes a day so I've spent some crystals but not that many.

You act like you have to spend 20k in crystals to get 1 g13 to r7. You don't it just takes some time.

  • I wish I could be a ftp like that. My luck with slicing has been subpar. Granted, I also don't like playing the mod swap game, so I could probably put together better sets than what I have allocated on certain characters. I can still finish in the top 50 with my DR team with subpar speeds. I just don't believe in spending on these games because they can be gone in an instant. I have played too many freemium games that just disappear over night to bother putting money into them.

You don't have to have your mods optimized on every toon for arena. Just the team you are using. If you run any other teams to climb, it helps to also put good mods on them.

I by no means have my mods optimized. I do however have my faatest mods on my arena team. That isn't too had to do if you sort by speed and play around with it a little.

And I try to make sure the fastest mods other than arena go on toons that are being used somewhere in the game. I put sets together and mod certain teams for a raid every now and then burmt I rarely swap mods for anything short of a journey/legendary toon. They just have to do ok with what they have.

Also if you make gmy fast, and throw him in your team somewhere, it can make the mirrior matches much easier. Brood alpha also helps for faster darth revan teams. I can beat g13 malak teams that have the speed advantage with darth revan, badstilla, hk, gmy, and brood. It isn't perfect but if you get gmy fast enough to go second after their darth revan, it can win more times than not.

How can you not think being a whale makes getting great mods easier? Seriously if you take 2 ultra competitive players one ftp the other a whale the whale will always win. Sure in your most ideal situation mods can help a ftp beat a whale but this is reality.

A whale can buy more energy for mods, so he can constantly farm for the truly best mods.
A whale can constantly upgrade mods to see if they have the best stats.
A whale can buy all the slicing materials needed to slice his mods up to 6 dot.

Even you the great ftp can't do that as you will run out of any of the above and the whale won't. Just facts of life

Also I need no advice from you and in such a condescending tone wouldn't ask if you were the perfect player. My guild is full of quite a few whales and ftp they are great at giving advice when asked.

  • I appreciate OP's honesty and I totally understand the frustration. But you guys need to keep in mind that this is how the game works. They always move the goal post further and further away. You're not supposed to have EVERYTHING, no matter how much you spend.

People who have been playing the game for a while should know that things always could become obsolete at any point in the game. Things get released, people use them, then content/meta changes and said things become obsolete or at least a lot less useful overall. It's always been like that and it's how they make money. Initially people always complain, but at some point the dust settles and life goes on. Over 3 years ago some people whaled out on Ima-Gun Di and his Jedi buddies like Aayla, Kit etc.. Some were able to climb high with that team in Squad Arena and it was amazing for the Tank Raid. They weren't nerfed but things got released that simply made that Jedi Team a lot less useful. Sure, some people got upset and mad because they spent on that team but that frustration went away after a while (usually overshadowed by the next one). Do you see anybody complain TODAY how the team they spent money on 3 years ago isn't useful anymore? Of course not, because it's a thing from the past. Things become obsolete, that's simply the way it is. I'm not saying I like that, all I'm saying is that by now we should accept that the game simply works that way. It will never change.

Things will always calm down after a while. The first days of ANY releases are always fueled by some frustration for a myriad of reasons. Some don't see the value in the stuff they bought and don't feel satisfied, some spend and still can't get the stuff they wanted, some don't spend and are frustrated that things are too hard or that spenders are too far ahead etc., the list goes on and on. If you've been playing the game then you should know and BE AWARE that stuff you spend money on could become useless at any point in the game. It's something you should always keep in mind and consider when deciding whether to spend on something or not. If you decide to spend, don't come in the next second, complaining how your shiny new toy isn't so shiny and new all of a sudden. It's how the game works. When you purchase something, you basically agree indirectly that you're accepting the fact that it could become obsolete at some point, be it sooner or later. And if you don't like the prices then vote with your wallet and don't spend. Let CG rethink their price-making. And if you don't want to vote with your wallet, then just keep spending if you can afford it anyway. No one is forcing you to spend, just as much as no one is forcing you to stop spending. If you're someone who spent 15k or more on the game, why does it matter to you if you need another few grand to keep up? You'll going to spend it anyway. Or you won't and become f2p or quit.

This was not supposed to be a post against whales or krakens. They play a great role in keeping the game alive after all. All I'm trying to say is that you guys should be aware that this is how the game works, and has always been. You either vote with your wallet or keep spending. If you don't want to do either, then feel free to quit. Or try enjoying the game as a f2p. At least give it a shot before you leave, maybe you'll like it. So keep calm guys. Do what you think is right for you and your current situation. I'm fairly sure things will settle down at some point, as they always have.
  • ^^ came here to post something like this, too. The game is about the judicious allocation of limited resources. Relics stratify the game, and if you spend on them, you will win over those who don't. But even within the loftiest spenders, this bring the fun of trying to win without knowing you can buy your victory.

While I don't relish the thought of being knocked down a peg or 500, I am glad to see that competition being preserved in all echelons of the game.

    Don't quit just because you can't P2W.

I know this quote is taken from one of the first pages of this discussion, but it's a point I'd like to put my 2 cents on. I definitely understand the arguments you brought up in your first long post and why you want to stop paying money for this game. What I don't understand - in general, that's why I'm picking it up - is the definition of competition you state. If I play such a game f2p or spend a normal amount of 10-20$ a month, and through good strategy I get able over time to compete with players who p2w, I enjoy that feeling of true achievement through hard "work". Playing the game means farming, grinding, patience... I would feel extremely bored if I could just buy everything instantly, as that has nothing to do with competition imho... only competition is who has the bigger rl wallets. :D B)

Only way to really enjoy this game now is accept the game for now what it is. Don’t worry if you don’t get rank 1 everyday/don’t worry if you don’t win every Championship Arena you enter. But how is losing and falling behind enjoyable??

It is the nature of PvP that everybody can't win all the time. In every GA round 50% of players will lose. It's inherent in the system.
  • I’m at 4.9 million GP. I don’t consider myself a whale or kraken. What’s helped me was I started at launch/continuously got rank 1 for payout/and spent 50 bucks a month for years.

I’m not happy with the state of the game. Soon as I catch up I end up following behind. It’s getting harder and harder to stay competitive.

G13/relics are a blatant cash grab. I get it this game needs to make money to stay afloat....but I seriously doubt they are struggling financially. It’s not like CG lives check to check. They’ve made 10s of millions of dollars over the last 3.5 years.

Only way to really enjoy this game now is accept the game for now what it is. Don’t worry if you don’t get rank 1 everyday/don’t worry if you don’t win every Championship Arena you enter. But how is losing and falling behind enjoyable??

I remember a time when they added protection to stop the one hit Ko’s.....now we have Grevious suicide teams KO’ing entire G13 teams a long with Anakin at R7 doing the same exact thing Grevious does. What was the point of protection being added years ago??

This game has changed way too much and I totally see why people are leaving.

Just when you think your team is maxed out CG comes out with another cash grab which makes your team weaker than it was before. I’m not a fan of g13 or relics. I’ll have to settle for getting that stuff slowly and accept not being as competitive.

This is now the road the game has taken....we can either accept it or move on. For now I’ve accepted it but I can’t see myself continuing to support them financially going forward.

I’ve been gaming online since 2001.....I’ve never seen a company do to its players what cg is doing to this game. It annoys me to remember what this game was at launch and to see what its become now.

It's mostlt darth revan teams that get one shot. That is also due to lower defense as the ferocity that is part of their kit. Gg or anakin are now hard counters.

But they don't hold on defense. A fast thrawn fracturing padme shuts down a padme team almost instantly. Then kill anakin first and it's an easy win. Don't need g13. G12 is plenty.

Ep and traya shut down gg. My g12 team kills a r5 gg nuke team on my climb. So not a good defense.

Hard counters are nothing new. They don't break the game. And rest assured, the next meta will be beefy enough that they won't be one shot.
  • Hard counters are nothing new. Unfortunately "new" hard counters via new character introduction or re-re-works in the case of GG that completely invalidate prior investments are also nothing new. The fact that Relics are a temporary way to bypass not having decent mods is just a slightly more blatant cash grab than other meta manipulation tactics that have been the state of the galaxy for over two years now. Nothing new, just another straw on top of that camel's back.

Power creep may not be enjoyable to you but it is necessary. If I could still use a team I maxed 2 years ago to take 1st in arena, there would be no incentive to work towards anything new that comes out. It's necessary for there business model to work.

Relics aren't any different than any new gear that was added in the past. When g12 came out it gave an advantage to those that got it first. Though not enough to make up for a bad team or bad mods. Relics seem to be the same way.

I wasn't really talking about power creep, as much as the fact that squads have become pretty prescriptive over the past year. Get your JKR? Check. DR to counter him? Check. Malak to beat DR? Check? Not enough people "invested" in GG?? - here's a rework to help counter DR/Malak and move that along. Check.

There's power creep, which is all fine and good and necessary, then there's this prescriptive checklist of characters to farm (currently Shaak Ti and the 501st for whoever is "caught up").

Any purchase made in this game provides a temporal benefit that is only useful until the developer decides that it is no longer useful. I'm not saying that's good or bad, just stating that's the way I look at spending money in this game. Relics appear to be just a bigger step in that same direction - a way for competitive spenders to stay on top and a way for non-competitive spenders to keep up until their competition catches up.

I find it amusing that a team that had no business beating me pre-Relic is can now beat me simply because they spent $300 on a few R7 characters (and I've chosen not to partake in Relic madness myself). That will last for a month, maybe two, maybe three, and they'll be back in the same boat they were prior to spending all that money. Relics appearing so quickly (for this game) after G12 finishers just shortened the advantage people who were spending on G13 had - providing less "value" for that investment.
  • I understand the power creep and adding new tiers of gear. It’s how they did it that is so perturbing. It’s the end of their fiscal quarter so, like always, they did this huge cash grab. If it wasn’t only a couple months after g13 and if they did it in waves, like you can only level relics to 4 now and then 3 months from now they added levels 5-7, it would have been more palatable.

Well they did do it in waves. It's just that 7 tiers is the first wave. They've made it pretty clear there will be more tiers later. If they had done relic 4 to start you'd probably say they should have started with 1 or 2.

But if no more gear what scrap is 8+ going to use? New raid drops? LSGEOTB?
  • You clearly never played Star Wars Galaxies. Probably the best MMO ever (imo) until the combat revamp.

Not probably; it was the best ever. I was lucky enough to get in the beta, I built a new computer just to play that game, I unlocked my force sensitive character... god I loved that game, it was a shame what they did to it.

I have been playing since November 2016, average 1 in both Arenas and have spent a marginal amount of money compared to most others and have very strategically planned out my farming for characters, gear, mods etc to remain extremely competitive while keeping as close to FTP as I could. With that said, I also truly love the game and have made some great friends in the game that have turned into friends out of the game. Although you have obviously spent way more than me, you have expressed the same exact feelings that I have had ever since the announcement of relics. I was going to give it a try to see if you could maintain top without spending and it is virtually impossible. Without mentioning a name, because I do like this player, he is a true Kraken and his Arena team cannot be beat without spending money.

After this TB, I will be quitting the game. Thank you CG for ruining the game with such a poor planned power creep.

Let me fix something for you:
he is a true Kraken and his Arena team cannot be beat ON DAY ONE without spending money.

This is ALWAYS how the game has been -- spenders get a time advantage, and when something new that affects arena is dropped, they get a small period of advantage in arena. New meta character drops? Those who spend $500 gearing the character in the first hour of release have an advantage while others catch up. Relics aren't really any different; they just look different.

More like day one through half of year one. Then obviously new things come out and then you are behind again.
