I'm pretty sure a lot of people have been hoarding purple mats before this
I have 280 purple mats. Not because of a specific reason, but because I was trying to decide which character to level first. I do not level a character until he is atleast 5 or 6 stars, no point wasting mats on rabble. I'm still trying to decide on which to level, but now I know my main chars won't need many purple mats (just for the level 6 passives)
I actually like this idea! Some ability above 70 level can change a lot in the battle. Gold ability mat make no one can reach level 8 ability in a few days. It probably need a weeks to level up a single ability, and it can prevent the whales take over the top leadboad just after the update. Maybe it can make every one still have chance to fight for top 1 place. And I can use my purple ability mat stock for my bench team now.
By the time most of us reach 80, the whales will have a few weeks' worth of golden mats. But yes, the gap doesn't increase after that. Except you can bet EA are gonna sell those mats for cash.
lol this is a big middle finger to those who "bought" lots of these, or have hoarded them. Wish this was in the update notes (not that it would change anything).
I don't see your point of view. A middle finger would be if they removed the purple mats entirely. You can simply spend your mats elsewhere. This forum can find anything to get mad about.

Dream on! Whales will be whales regardless, the changes to mats and gear hurt dolphins and FTP most of all.
This is a great example of pacing implemented WITHOUT a tedious grind! I'm so relieved that we'll actually be getting these materials without having to put in any extra effort grinding, since I'm already putting a lot of energy into gear farming.
Here's the thing. The pace and the internal economy of the game is already set. That pace decides the drop rates on the ability mats, gear pieces, shards etc. Setting a pace in a game is crucial for controlling how it develops and making sure it doesn't easily develop a little elite of whales who have everything already.
This way, in the long run, everybody will be able to develop their characters' max skills at an equal pace and without having to grind through 700 energy with a drop rate adjusted to work with the projected pacing of one mat per day. Which would likely be something like a 1% drop rate. Nobody wants that.

Dude, everyone has all the purple mats needed to get their 5'toons abilities to lvl 8 (or so they thought.) This means more grinding, more time. This is not a good thing.
Now, the first ones to get these omegas will be whales, and they will have a huge advantage because of this. If instead lvl 8 abilities need purples mats, then anyone could get them via challenges. I don't understand your logic.

False. I for one am absolutely starved for purple mats. I have three right now. If you have purple mats in abundance, good for you, but don't assume everybody is playing the game the same way you are. Also, why is it a bad thing that the final abilities of each toon (hint: omega) takes extra time to unlock?
How many days do you think the true whales will gain upon a regular player? Remember, five days is ONE skill up, most toons have three-four.
Finally... There is not a game in existence (at least not a profitable one) that doesn't reward ppl for spending money. Complaining about the fact that whales (= BIG spenders) get a competitive advantage (although I'm not convinced how big it would actually be) just doesn't come across as very realistic.

But what about beyond your 5 toons? I'm seeing this update as a great opportunity to focus on getting other characters on par.
True this lets you get all your backup toons to ability 7. Not sure why you need to do this, but it may make this process more fun.
I think whales will reach lvl 80 weeks before most people. Which is a advantage. Before, pretty much everyone got the same with challenges, GW and cantina. Whales probably get a few more from buying packs.
Here's the real question:
Are omegas going to be for sale at some point??
Yes they will I bet my life on it.
Will they be expensive??
Yes they will I bet my life on it.
Which is fine. You want to spend money, go for it. That's ok. My point is this: this is not f2p freindly.
Whale can get omegas first for sure. But, even whale can only get some per day. If they want use them to all 5 in his arena squad to be full ability level up, it seems need to take a least a month to to that. If level 8 ability still using the purple mat, maybe a couple weeks later you will see the full ability level up team in arena.
Dream on! Whales will be whales regardless, the changes to mats and gear hurt dolphins and FTP most of all.
I don't deny the whale will do anything they can do to reach level 80 asap. In the short term, even whale can't get the gold mat very easy because it is daily challenge reward while you reach 80. It mean there have gap time that no one will have any level 8 ability toon. In the mid term, whale can definitely get the advantage because of gold mat and new gear. But the game's profit depend on spender. If they don't pay a lot, maybe the game will not exist too long. So I think there is nothing wrong that dev let the whale get some advantage. But it shouldn't give too much advantage to make dolphins and FTP can't catch up in the long term.

Hmm, spend them on what? Characters I don't care about? Sounds fun

Ability mats so far haven't been made available to buy, except for as parts of Aurodium packs. You're entitled to speculate, but I don't give anything for it. People love to speculate. You can basically let your mouth run but never have to own up to it since it's forgotten by tomorrow.
The new calculations for the time to hit 80 is 24-72 days (by team iNstinct). 24 days means you spend literally several thousands of crystals every day. For 24 days.
72-24 days=48 days, or nine maxed out level 8 skills. That means that maybe half the super whale's team is done by the time the regular player starts out. All for the nifty price of ~50-60,000 crystals.
I'd say many would feel that to be not very PTW friendly.
This change helps people that didn't stockpile, and avoids having 10% of the player base being level 8 in 17 seconds, absolutely disrupting everyone. It also limits Whale Absolute Supremacy (WAS) and rewards actually playing the game every day. It also forces people to be very very selective on who to upgrade with lasting consequences in team setup.
You may like it or not but I see why they did this change. Also, the NEW gear requirements help slow down whales. They can get to level 8 very fast refreshing like true madmen, but they can't have geared up all the new gear in advance. Otherwise, they would have instantly geared EVERY TOP CHAR to max gear (some even 11) making Arena totally Hoardable by ththe m regardless of how sound their choices where. They will still gear up much faster than FTP but they will also have less information into what works best in the new meta. FTP will suffer but less than otherwise, but can watch what works best as to not invest their extremely limited refreshes on c rap.

I agree. Also, it allows you some time to use any extra purples getting your b team's abilities leveled up. It makes it so you don't have to hoard purple mats for only your a team(provided you already have them leveled to 7.)

Well, I don't want to rain on your parade but I think you got this backwards. This patch absolutely helps whales.. it will give them an advantage for months. They will also be able to adjust to the meta much quicker... since farming gear will be much easier. They will control the leader boards and hoard the crystals. If you are f2p, "this is not the patch you are looking for."
Quick question everyone. When we saw purple hair dryers in challenges what challenge was it? Cause i don't see it in attackers and tanks challenges right now. If it is not in the healer challenge either we are screw'd

Disappointing, but at least everyone is in the same boat with this change, unlike the new purple gear formulas that will create a huge gulf between the people who had the gear to craft before the change and the people now staring at a formula requiring material that doesn't even exist.
