I was in the same boat and decided to carry on with my level 70 (max level when I stopped) and start a fresh at the same time. After 3 months or so, my fresh account is at level 79 ranking no.1 in arena managing plenty of energy refreshes a day completing GW every day and ranking 1-5 in fleets at payout time. My old account, managed to reach 180 in arena doing barely any refreshes and I've finished GW probably half of the time. My new account has a better deeper roster than my old account due to more refreshes being available for farming shards and gear. I can do more in rancor and AAT on my new account even though I'm 6 levels lower
In short, I've decided to stop using my old account and carry on with the newer account. I have spent money on both, but nothing whale-like
I would go for Zeta Vader, TFP, Palpatine, Boba Fett, Shoretrooper, and maybe even Magmatrooper (he will help beat quick teams since I assume your speed mods aren't as good as everyone else's)
The issue is how long it will be to get Zetas.
In order to get Zetas work on Tarkins Ship and 5star Darkside ships
I know it takes awhile. But I was giving him a long term plan to make it to the top of arena (without shelling out $100s on mods)
(P.S. He only needs 5 4* dark side ships. And then 8 5* ships to do the zeta challenge, plus Tarkin at 5* like you said)
Also OP you just avoid the zeta challenge for now and farm 20 zetas in shipments with fleet arena rewards in order to zeta Vader asap

This is all a plan to maintain an account which is fine but there is no way in hell he is going to be competitive in squad arena which will really help him in long run in terms of crystals and squad farming
Starting over may be beneficial if you don't have much money invested. You would have so much catching up to do, even with the people up in the 1000s. If you start over you will be placed on a younger shard and you will have the benefit of knowing which toons to go for in the early game.
i would pick up where you left off if it were me. if it were me what i know now about the game i would have still invested in the same toons i am now. i wouldn't do anything different. except maybe never activated certain toons or activated ships or took part in the arena.
You should check out the Lord Skunk guides. They're very helpful. I think they reviewed the Top 10 characters that could use a rework on their last Youtube show. Avoid spending more time on any of those players (e.g., Luke, Nate Gunray, etc.)! Btw, Jedi Knight Guardian and Mace Windu are awful!
The other thing I would recommend is to look at the meta report (also covered in the Lord Skunk's weekly shows) - I mean, General Kenobi is going to be out of reach for you, but you might consider working on your Rebel team in advance of the next Emperor's Demise event in March so that you can get Emperor Palpatine. If you started now, I don't think you'd get enough shards to get EP to 7* in March, but since they're rotating the Emperor's Demise event with Yoda events every other month, you'll be able to get enough EP shards in a few months.
I suppose the last thing I'd recommend is to focus on gear. Some characters can be viable at low stars but high gear levels (e.g., Shoretrooper).

Yeah that's why I said he should just farm zetas from shipments. I assume he will get on an easier server since he hasn't joined yet. If he can place top 500 each day it will take 40 days to get a zeta.
It will probably take about the same amount of time to unlock Baze.
Vader he should have already at least at 6*
Don't know if he has palpatine but that event is returning every other month now

So who do I go for now ? I was from the Rey, QGJ and Jedi era. Should I leave these characters as it is and focus on guys like Lando, Wedge, Biggs, Baba Fett, Emperor etc. ? And I am having a bit of hard time getting used to the ships. Which one do I prefer ? It seems I will need to devote quite a bit of time to read up the forums and see what the current trends are...
