Growing up in Miami, I lived next to a nice family whose son had a Santana cover band. One day they were rehearsing and the prettiest girl (imho) was sitting on the sidewalk was listening to them play. I actually got up the nerve to go sit and talk with her. Ahh those were the days. Thanks to Carlito, and the guys next door.
I was about 17 when Vietnam ended. I wondered prior would I be going, pretty much every night watching the news. Seeing my friends older brother drafted, scared he wouldn't come back. Thankfully he did. He wasn't the same though. He wouldn't or couldn't talk about it. This song always brings back those feelings. Coupled with where this was filmed, resonates on a personal level being of German Heritage (Berlin 7 years after the wall fell). When I think of Mark Knopfler, this is the first song I think of. Maybe one day I will get through it dry eyed. Maybe..
Note: In the past (elsewhere) I have talked about things like this and some felt I was likening how I felt to the feelings of those that served there. In no way shape or form, do I even pretend to know what it was like. And at 60, I'm thankful I never will. To those that served, and continue to serve, Thank you.
This song will always take me back. I think of the movie the Big Chill. And Old friends getting together to mark the passing of one of them. I think about all the people I've loved, and lost. The curse of old age is watching those around you, fall away.
I love those guys, and my GF introduced me to this one, been a favorite since. Seagulls! I'm landlocked in the middle of a large country, and the gulls that come to visit the lakes here don't cry like that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOj3kJKy-_U
When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck sayin'
Fellas, it's too rough to feed ya
At seven pm a main hatchway caved in, he said
Fellas, it's been good t'know ya
The captain wired in he had water comin' in
And the good ship and crew was in peril
And later that night when his lights went outta sight
Came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
"I am so proud Mr. Lightfoot wrote this song. I am the very proud daughter of the cook (Robert Rafferty) in which he is mentioned in song. I almost always stand up when he mentions the wives and the sons and the DAUGHTERS when I see him in concert. "
"Procol Harum is an English rock band formed in 1967. Their best-known recording is the 1967 hit single "A Whiter Shade of Pale", considered a classic in popular music and one of the few singles to have sold over 10 million copies. Although noted for their baroque and classical influence, Procol Harum's music also embraces the blues, R&B, and soul."
To my original question, what groups will still be together and playing in.. 50 years? I can't think of any really.
I can't imagine any band from this era lasting 50 years. I'm a big fan of Gordon's, love that song.
I came here this morning to post another song, but in view of what's gone before I must post this first.
I always enjoy his storytelling. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yx0ldsWv6iY
I'm a big Nascar fan, watched the race in Phoenix yesterday, the one last week in Vegas, and most of them for the last 10 years. So here's another story. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vs91er7AZmg
Great selections, Many do not know Mark is a classical guitarist.
Here is an interview I never saw coming, and it turned my world around with regards to what I thought about Vincent (Alice). As for Glenn, I watched my father go through Alzheimer's. I understand all too well what he talks about with Glenn.
May I jump in? Here's a moment in time: 1992 Pearl Jam live version of Black. Raw and believable performance, really start hitting it around 3:00. My favorite Pearl Jam performance. https://youtu.be/n3r9KWth84Y
Many years ago, I worked for Radio Shack, and CD players had just started coming out. Still quite expensive, but interest was high in them. My manager had a masters in music and he wanted us to use this music when demo-ing the cd players for it's clarity and broad appeal. It uses sounds from nature as well as synthesizers, etc. One day an older man came in and wanted to listen to a CD player, he explained he couldn't afford one but was curious about the sound reproduction of one. I put our demo unit on with this playing and stepped back. After it ended, I approached him, he stood there in silence, crying. All he could say was "It's so beautiful..". I never forgot that, the power of music.
Edit: On the subject of CD players, well, not really.. but, when I was a kid, 12 or 14 or so, my dad taught me how to fix 8 track tapes. Then, as an older kid, cassettes were introduced.
I put one in my Chevy Malibu when I was 16.

Those were the days. I had an 8track player in my room at home. Wore it out lol
Ah, Harry, if only you'd had a driver, you might be with us still.
Glory days reminds me of someone else, but that's not what I came here to post. This song has been in my head a couple of days, I woke one morning and played the live version. Just now I found the studio cut with pictures, and it worked for me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oA1I11IeF8U
Rather than edit this into last post I will just ask. Does anyone remember a road trip movie where the guys were playing a game where they'd name a musician and how they died?
